Rorke’s Drift —Index.
Having kept thousands of warriors in reserve for the successful assault on the British camp at Isandlwana, the reserve was dispatched to seal off any lines of escape for the fleeing British and Colonial troops—on the Zulu side of the Buffalo River, King Cetshwayo had expressly forbid invasion or crossing into Natal. However a breakaway reserve regiment not involved at Isandlwana and anxious to ‘wash their spears’, crossed the Buffalo River with the intention of plundering, looting or destroying white farms and homesteads in Natal. It just so happened that there was a lightly guarded British supply depot with a company of redcoat soldiers to guard it—just across the river.
The thought of obtaining more firearms and ammunition was too much for the Zulu commander— Prince Dabulamanzi and an assault on the post known as Rorke’s Drift was ordered. |
