Section 4—The Aftermath

Isandlwana 1879

Visiting the Battlefield at Isandlwana.

There are two ways to reach Isandlwana and the battlefields. On my first trip in 2004, I flew into Duran and hired a 4 x 4. I drove up North from there up the route Chelmsford, Durnford etc would have taken on the way up to the forward assembly area. Pass Pietermaritzburg, Dundee etc. In 2006, I flew into Johannesburg and drove South. Both drives take 4-5 hours in good driving roads. I suggest you need a 4 x 4 to visit most of the locations near Isandlwana as these type of cars have better clearance underneath. There are a few lodges and B&B’s around the area. I preferred to stay at Isandlwana Lodge as the battlefield was right there and I could walk and get a feel for the battle of Isandlwana. Pat Stubbs will assure you of a warm welcome and 1st class hospitality. The lodge also has Mr Rob Gerrard in residence. Rob is an expert in his field and you must take in one or two of his tours. A more passionate man about the Zulu war you could not wish to meet. Dalton the barman is on hand also to assist Rob and does a ‘wicked’ Fugitives Trail !
