The aim of this web site is to provide a pictorial view of the battlefield at Isandlwana - South Africa, for those not as fortunate as myself that have not had or will not have the chance to visit such a historic place.
I have photographed different area’s of this battlefield that are as not as well known in books that we read today. It just might help other enthusiasts like myself to link words from the many books on Isandlwana with pictures that are not always seen or published.
There are in fact a surprising number of books available to read today, about a battle that occurred over 130 years ago. Two books in particular stand out. Mike Snook’s book “How Can Man Die Better” and also Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill’s book “Zulu Victory”. Reading those books would give a great understanding to the battle and help you to relate to the photo’s in this site. Please enjoy these pages of photographs and I do hope it helps fellow enthusiasts to get a better idea of the terrain and layout of this battlefield. Isandlwana is a special place. The landscape, the people and the history.
I would like to add my admiration to the authors of two books in particular. Mike Snook, Peter Quantrill and Ron Lock. To write a book on the subject of Isandlwana must be daunting task—even today. There is also a web site with a forum where I have often sat back, thoroughly hooked and read the views, facts and exchanges between fellow enthusiasts like Mike, Peter and Ron.
To these guys we owe a big thank you for keeping the Battle of Isandlwana alive today.
Rorke’s Drift has always been the more famous of the Zulu War battlefields. I admit, my first 4 books I read about the Zulu War was on the battle at Rorke’s Drift. Then my interest grew. In particular, Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill then Lt Col Mike Snook have written excellent accounts and opinions on the subject of Isandlwana and I was hooked! I had to visit. I had to see the battlefields. I wanted to see the Isandlwana Battlefield and all the sites I have read about for years. Tahelane, Conical Hill, Ngwebini, Fugitives etc all spring to mind. Even now I can raise a smile when I remember my visits to such a special place. This is my attempt at helping fellow enthusiasts get a better picture and understanding of the area that covers the Battle of Isandlwana 1879. Enjoy it! |
