The Battle

Isandlwana 1879

Barry’s Picket on Magaga Knoll.

As part of the picketing arrangements on 22nd January 1879. A company of NNC under Captain Barry was posted onto a ridge to the North of the camp called Magaga Knoll. It is an outstanding feature enabling a good view to the North, East and West of the camp. On the previous night, this position was subject to several ‘visits’ from the as yet undetected main Zulu Army scouts. Reports were sent back down to camp to Pulleine claiming that Zulu scouts were calling out to the NNC pickets on Magaga Knoll. These reports were probably dismissed or not acted upon.
