Helpmekaar
Prior to attaching himself to No:3 invading column, Lord Chelmsford had made arrangements for the assembly of the column to be made high up on the Helpmekaar Plateau. This spot offered security and storage area’s for the thousands of men, horses and oxen. Conditions were bleak on the heights with high winds, rain and even snow on a nice summers day. This area became somewhat deserted in the days leading up to the ultimatum expiry on 11th Jan 1879 as the troops moved down to the forward assembly area at the mission station on Rorke’s Drift to prepare to invade Zululand. |
